With the certificate “Expert knowledge examination according to §34a GewO” you can carry out a variety of activities in the security industry.
This certificate is a legally required certificate for certain activities in the security industry and significantly expands your career opportunities in this sector.
This includes, for example, property security, event security, alarm tracking, reception and porter services.
Security services in public transportation and guarding asylum seekers’ accommodation.

- Legal requirement: For many activities in the security industry, this certificate is required by law and is indispensable.
- Responsibility and trust: With the certificate, you show potential employers that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to take on responsible tasks in the security sector.

Both parts must be passed in order to receive the certificate “Examination of expertise in accordance with §34a GewO”.
- Format: Multiple-choice questions.
- Duration: Usually 120 minutes.
- Content: The written exam covers the following topics:
- Law on public safety and order
- Trade law and data protection
- German Civil Code (BGB)
- Criminal and procedural law
- Accident prevention regulations
- Dealing with people, especially de-escalation techniques
- Security technology
- Format: Examination interview in front of an examination board.
- Duration: About 15-20 minutes.
- Content: In the oral examination, practical questions are asked to test the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in real-life situations.
Topics may include:- Behavior in conflict and dangerous situations
- Communication techniques
- Legal regulations in practice
- Safety measures and their implementation
- Assessment: Both parts of the exam are assessed separately.
You must pass both the written and the oral exam. - Result: After completing the exam, you will receive the result.
If you pass both parts, you will receive the certificate “Examination of expertise according to §34a GewO”. - Repetition: If you do not pass a part, you can repeat it.
The IHK usually gives you the opportunity to retake the failed parts at a later date.
If you wish, we can organize the exam for you at the IHK in Gera.
However, you can also schedule an exam at other IHK locations.

You can apply for a police clearance certificate in Germany in various ways.
Here are the steps you can follow to obtain a police clearance certificate:
Application on site:
- Application location: You can apply for a police clearance certificate at the relevant registration office (e.g. residents’ registration office or citizens’ registration office) in your municipality.
- Documents: You will need the following documents:
- A valid identity card or passport.
- In some cases, written confirmation from the employer or the institution requesting the certificate of good conduct may be required (especially in the case of extended certificates of good conduct).
- Application form: Fill out the application form on site.
The staff at the registration office will help you if necessary. - Fees: The processing fee is usually 13 euros.
This can be paid directly at the time of application (in cash or by EC card, depending on the authority). - Processing time: The certificate of good conduct is usually sent to you by post within 1-2 weeks.
Online application:
- Requirements: For the online application you need:
- A new ID card with activated online ID function.
- A card reader or an NFC-enabled smartphone.
- The AusweisApp2 software, which you can download free of charge.
- Application: Visit the website of the Federal Office of Justice(www.fuehrungszeugnis.bund.de) and follow the instructions for applying for a certificate of good conduct.
- Identification: You must identify yourself with your new ID card and the AusweisApp2.
- Fees: The fee of 13 euros can be paid online (e.g. by credit card or Giropay).
- Processing time: The certificate of good conduct will also be sent by post within 1-2 weeks.
- Making an appointment: Make an appointment with your responsible case worker at the job center or employment agency.
- Preparation: Prepare yourself well for the interview.
Think about what further training or retraining you would like to do and how this measure can improve your job prospects.
- Needs assessment: Your training needs will be determined during the consultation.
Your advisor will discuss with you whether further training or retraining is necessary and useful to improve your career prospects. - Bring your documents with you: Take relevant documents with you, such as your CV, certificates, any proof of previous further training and information about the desired training program.
- Recognized measures: The desired further training or retraining course must be offered by a certified training provider and usually also be listed in the database of the Federal Employment Agency (KURSNET).
- Educational institutions: Find out about various educational institutions and what they offer.
You can also get advice on this from your case officer.
- Application: You submit the application for an education voucher together with your case worker.
The exact content, objectives and course of the training measure will be discussed. - Cost coverage: The education voucher usually covers the costs of further education, including course fees, examination fees and any travel costs or childcare costs.
- Checking the application: Your application will be checked by the Jobcenter or the Employment Agency.
This may take some time. - Decision: You will receive written notification as to whether your application has been approved.
If approved, you will receive the training voucher, which you must submit to the training provider.
- Submission to the training provider: Submit the training voucher to the selected training provider to register for the training measure.
- Start of the course: After registering, you can start the training or retraining course.
The training provider settles the costs directly with the job center or employment agency.
